Cybercrime established in the COIP and how to prevent them

Cybercrime are illicit activities, which are commitment through technological means and devices and communication, whose purpose is to cause some damage, cause losses or prevent the use of computer systems. In recent times, child pornography, computer fraud and even terrorist activities have been considered as new computer crimes.

All the activities that contemplate, recordings and photographs without consent or legal authorization, impersonation of electronic keys, damage or loss of international information, intervention or violation in the privacy of people, among others, are illegal.

Currently, Ecuador has laws that sanction this type of crime with deprivation of liberty penalties, which are recognized in the Criminal Integral Organic Code (COIP)

The recognized computer crime are:

-Child pornography 13 to 16 years in prison.

-Violation of the right to privacy – from one to three years in prison

-Illegal disclosure of database information – from one to three years in prison

-Interception of communications – from three to five years in prison

-Pharming and Phishing – three to five years in prison

-Computer fraud – three to five years in prison

-Attack on the integrity of computer systems – from Three to five years in prison

Crimes against legally reserved public information – from three to five years in prison

Non- consensual access to a computer, telematics or telecommunications system – from three to five years in prison

The National Police Ecuador makes some recommendation to avoid being a victim of Cybercrime.

Do not post personal information on unfamiliar pages or social networks.

Do not rely on offers and very low prices when buying any service.

Create strong passwords.

Do not share security keys with other people.

Do not save passwords on public computers to avoid scams.

Verify bank accounts in personal computers.

Have a good antivirus installed.

Keep the messages, emails and all the wrong information; they will serve in case it is necessary to report to the authorities.

Do not trust unknown emails.

Constantly monitor when a minor is in the network.
